Large sinkhole swallows up part of London street
Jul 21, 2022BBC London News called on our Head of Science Dr Timothy Farewell to provide an expert view on the Bexleyheath sinkhole that dramatically appeared on a residential road yesterday (22nd June).
"Our data immediately identifies that the location has potential natural ground, mining and clay subsidence risks, in addition to risk relating to natural underground cavities - all within close proximity of Martens Avenue. Based on the findings of our data report, there are several reasons as to why this collapse may have occurred at this particular location. It is a real world example of why due diligence into ground-based risks, using reports such as ours, is so important when purchasing a property.
Accessing scientific-led data insights such as these will ultimately help make sure that homebuyers are aware of potential hazards in advance, and can proactively conduct appropriate surveys and acquire the most appropriate insurance possible, to keep one step ahead."
Talking on the BBC News evening broadcast, Dr Tim explained why sinkholes typically appear. Watch from 13:10 for the full story here.
